Well, previously I wrote about a “do-it-yourself” stick on under cabinet light by Sylvania. I have since had very bad luck with this product. The light source is very dim, even though it has 3 levels of light output, and is a pain to engage. It is motion sensored and you have to wave your hand past it, under the cabinet, until it turns on. It says wave over the sensor once for low, twice for medium and three times for high light output, but with one wave of your hand it goes from high to low and you have to continue waving till you get it just right. It has a magnet which sticks on to the bottom of your wall cabinet, and then the magnet holds the light disc (puck style) in place. Or I should say supposed to keep it in place. It does not stay up. The adhesive for the magnet does not hold and the light falls down. The first of three dropped off after about 2 weeks and the rest eventually dropped off as well, all within the first month I installed them. There are no holes to screw the magnetic disc in place so [...]

Here’s a great trick if you don’t have those built in lights under your kitchen cabinets to light your workspace. They are stick on, LED under cabinet lights, that are affordable and easy to “Do-It-Your-Self”. In most older kitchens and even some new ones that were not done by a professional kitchen designer, the very useful under cabinet lights are missing. Or they have these ugly white plastic boxes that most of the time show and don’t really work very well. Right? Well if your kitchen has this problem and you are not planning a remodel anytime soon, grab some of these LED Under Cabinet Lights. They are from Sylvania and I think they are the easiest and best because they are motion censored so they turn on and off on their own. No switches needed. They will probably outlast you even if you leave them on full time (not that I recommend that). They are super easy to install, use 2 AA batteries and turn on when you walk in the room! Having people over for dinner? Just stick them on before your guests arrive and no one will know they are not hardwired. You can also get the (also easy to install yourself) [...]

Briwax to Stain Kitchen Cabinets….DIY Quick Fix

Using Briwax to stain kitchen cabinets is a good DIY technique to change the look of your kitchen with a small budget. I forgot all about this product when I did my previous articles on cabinet quick fixes. This is a wax with a stain in it and can be used to darken stained cabinets. It works best if your cabinets do not have a shiny top coat especially one that is pealing or cracked. If not, this is a great product because you don’t have to do all the sanding that traditional refinishing requires. You will need to get some mineral spirits (I like the odorless kind) and just wipe down your existing cabinets after removing the doors and drawers. Make sure to mark the doors to the corresponding cabinets so when it’s time to put them back on it’s not a huge guessing game. Wipe down the face frames and all the surfaces to be waxed. Then you can use the product cold or in it’s thick waxy state or heat it up to give a thinner consistency to work with. I found that using it warm makes it go on more even and is more forgiving. Just [...]

Changing the center panel of your cabinets can make an old kitchen look new again. It’s another DIY idea for a small budget that has big impact is to spruce up your old dingy cabinets, for the time being, by popping out the center panels of the wall cabinets and replacing it with any number of decorative products mentioned below. Or you can just paint the center panel (if it is flat) with a chalkboard paint to add an artistic and interesting place for art or grocery lists etc.. If you decide to replace the center panel with any hard material like glass, sheet metal, lattice, embossed metal tiles or resin panels just to name a few, you will need to remove the cabinet door from the hinges first. Depending on your cabinets and how they were built, you might be able to pop the center area out or you might have to use a sawzall and cut the panel out. If you have to cut it out and you are going to use glass or something heavy and breakable as a replacement, you will want to route out an edge for the glass to recess into. If you can’t do this yourself, you can take your [...]

Maybe Paint or Stain your old Cabinets to brighten up your old space if your not quite ready for the big remodel. This is part of a series of articles on how to do a temporary quick fix in your kitchen if you know you will be able to remodel in a year or two, but you just can’t stand how it looks right now. The previous article talked about the most minimal thing you can do…. change the hardware, which is a great option with a big impact. (see Quick fix …….Hardware) But lets say your kitchen is more needy than just new knobs. Maybe it’s time to paint or stain your cabinets (just to get you by till the big remodel). There are a couple of things that you can DIY (do it yourself) with some sweat equity and about $100 bucks. If your cabinets are stained and you don’t want a painted cabinet, there is a product called Cabinet Transformations by Rustoleum. This product lets you darken or lighten your cabinets and keep the wood grain showing, unlike a paint. They have about 70 colors to work with, some are an opaque paint type finish, others a more [...]

Many of my clients ask me…..”which is better, getting local custom cabinets made or purchasing one of the well known semi-custom manufactured brands”? Well, I’m sorry to say I do not have an easy answer to this question. Both have their advantages and disadvantages and I usually ask a series of questions to find out which would be better for each client. Some people do a lot of research before hiring a designer and they have already decided on a well known cabinet manufacturer. Other times, my clients have a friend of a friend who had their cabinets made locally by a custom cabinet builder. If my clients have no inclination one way or another, lately I have been choosing the local custom maker over the manufactured brands, mainly for ease of use as well as a number of other factors. After designing the cabinets and layout on my CAD system, I can take the drawings to my local builder, choose all the details like the door style, wood species, finish and molding with my clients, then just be available for consultation with the cabinet maker, and I am basically done with the cabinets. However, with custom manufactured cabinets, I then find a showroom who has [...]
